The Parents of Benedetto Rosario Scovotti
My grandfather's parents were Donato Scovotto and Grazia Cammarano. Donato, was
born
28 Mar 1858 in Salerno, Campania, Italy and died about 1945 in Italy.
The picture on the left is the only picture of my great-grandfather that I am aware
exists.
I am confident that as you started reading you noticed the difference in spelling
of Donato's last name and my grandfather's. Well legal documents in our possession
show that Benedetto's last name is spelled Scovotto. It can only be guessed
that the misspelling occured when he first got off a boat from Italy.
Grazia, my grandfather's mother we know little about. Our records show she was born
and died in Italy.
The family consisted of the following children: Michael the oldest born
about 1884. Michael was followed by Anthony, Benedetto ( my grandfather ), Rose,
Francis or Kiki as she was known, Joseph, Louis, Giglio, and Maria in about 1902. There is
speculation that there might have been one, possibly two other children
but there is no evidence to support it.
The Donato Scovotto family were farmers and wine producers. The house my grandfather
grew up in is still in the family and is owned by his brothers youngest son,
Egidio Scovotto. My grandmothers autobiographical sketch, located on this
web site, indicates that due to a loss of wine in a ship wreck. Rosario
was sent to the United States, at that time, to earn money to help the
family out.
The ship wreck happened while the wine was being transported to Argentina. Why Argentina
is a good question. There are Scovotti's in Argentina today. They are the descendants
of Donato's brother Michael. Now the time and the reason for Michaels' move isn't known.
